The Feed
The Feed is your home page on UmayNow, a stream of posts from people and companies you follow or are connected with, plus anything else that's genuinely relevant to you.
Every post has an intent
An intent describes the purpose behind a post, and it's what makes professional content on UmayNow meaningful and discoverable rather than just noise. With the exception of Regular posts, every post should serve a clear purpose. Whether you're sharing knowledge, asking a question, looking for something, or offering something, your post should communicate why you're sharing it.
Needs
A Need expresses something you're looking for, a person, expertise, service, partnership, resource, or another type of professional support. Needs create a clear intent: you're looking for something.
Offers
An Offer expresses something you can provide to others, expertise, a service, collaboration, a product, or another form of professional value. Offers create a clear intent: you have something to provide.
Knowledge
A Knowledge post shares useful professional information, insights, lessons, or expertise. Use it when your intent is to inform, teach, or share something useful with the network.
Updates
An Update communicates something that's happened or changed in your professional life or work, a new project, a professional milestone, a company development, or another relevant update. The intent of an Update is to inform your network about something new.
Questions
A Question is used when you want to ask the network for information, opinions, experience, or help. Questions can also include a simple poll when you want to collect structured responses. The intent is clear: you're looking for answers or perspectives.
Regular
Regular is the exception to UmayNow's intent-based posting model. It's the one place you can share a more personal or standard post only with people you're connected with, related to your work or completely independent from it: everyday thoughts, personal updates, casual observations, or anything that doesn't need a specific professional intent. Every other post type should have a clear intent. Regular does not require one.
How intent helps discovery
The intent of a post provides important context for professional discovery. A Need is different from an Offer, a Question is different from Knowledge, an Update is different from a Regular post. This distinction helps UmayNow understand why a post exists, not just what it contains. For example:
Offer: I can provide Unreal Engine development
Knowledge: How we optimized our Unreal Engine pipeline
Question: What are the best approaches to Unreal Engine multiplayer architecture?
All four may mention the same subject, but their intents are completely different. This distinction matters because professional discovery isn't only about finding what someone is talking about. It's also about understanding what they're trying to accomplish.
Job postings, opportunities, and partnerships
Job postings, business opportunities, and company partnership announcements all show up in the feed automatically when they happen. You don't need to post those yourself.
Reacting, commenting, and sharing
Every post can get a reaction (Like, Appreciate, Insightful, Celebrate, or Interested), a comment, a save for later, a repost, or a quote if you want to add your own take on top of it. You can mention a person or a company anywhere you can type, in a post, a comment, or a message, just type an @ and pick them from the list. In the comments themselves, whatever you just posted jumps straight to the top so you can see it land, and comments with genuine engagement get pinned above the rest. Everything else stays in the order it was written.
Why some posts show up before others
Your feed isn't just chronological, and it isn't random either. A few plain rules decide what you see near the top:
- Newer posts get a boost, though the boost fades over time rather than disappearing all at once.
- Posts that are genuinely getting engagement, comments, saves, reposts, get ranked higher.
- Posts relevant to you specifically get a personal boost: someone in your role or industry, something that matches what you offer or need, a mutual connection, or someone highly trusted.
- Anything you've already seen ranks a little lower, so it doesn't keep taking up space once you've had your look.
On any post that's been personalized for you, there's a small "why am I seeing this" note that tells you the main reason it showed up. It only appears on posts we've actually ranked for you, never on your own posts, since those are always visible to you no matter what.
Keeping your feed the way you want it
Not everything belongs in your feed, and there's more than one way to fix that, depending on how strongly you feel about it.
- Hide a single post and it's gone for good.
- Not interested is softer. It tells us to show you less like it going forward, without deleting anything.
- Mute a person, from their profile, and you simply stop seeing their posts. It's silent, they're never told.
- Block a person and it goes further: neither of you sees the other anymore, you can't message each other, and any connection between you ends too.
If you come across something that's actually a problem, you can report it. Reporting is completely private, no one, including the author, ever sees who reported a post or how many reports it got. If enough trustworthy reports come in on a post, its reach quietly gets reduced. The author still sees a plain notice explaining what happened, and they're free to appeal it.
Deleting your own posts
You can delete anything you've posted, at any time. It's permanent, once it's gone, neither you nor anyone else can see it again.
Feed versus Updates
These are two different pages. The Feed is the personalized, ranked stream described above. The Updates page is much simpler, it's a plain list of things that happened to you: new followers, reactions on your posts, connection requests, application status changes, and so on, shown in the order they happened, with no ranking involved at all.
